If you have been waiting on a mattress, a fridge or a real grill upgrade, this is the weekend. Independence Day is one of three weekends a year when big-ticket pricing actually moves, and if you missed Memorial Day, the next equivalent window is not until Labor Day. By then, most of the popular grill and patio inventory is already gone.
We have spent the last couple of weeks watching pricing across the major retailers (Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Lowe's, Home Depot, plus the online mattress brands). The picks below are what we would buy ourselves. Anything where last week's price matched today's marked-down price gets filtered out, so you are not seeing fake discounts.

Different categories peak at different points of the year. Here is where July 4th genuinely delivers, based on what we have watched over the last three summers:
- Mattresses. Saatva, Casper, Tuft & Needle, Nectar and Helix all run their July promo within a few percentage points of Memorial Day. The store brands (Sealy, Serta) at Mattress Firm tend to go a bit deeper because of inventory turnover.
- Refrigerators, washers, dryers. Last year model years get cleared this weekend so retailers have floor space for fall releases. If you do not need the latest panel design, you can save 30%+ on a fridge that is a calendar year old. Same warranty.
- Grills. Weber, Traeger, Pit Boss and Char-Broil drop hardest right now. Manufacturer end-of-Q2 pressure is real. The popular SKUs sell out by Friday afternoon.
- Patio sets. Not as deep as Labor Day yet (that is the bottom), but if you find a piece you love, this is the right time. Labor Day pricing sometimes goes lower, but selection is gutted.
4th of July buying tips
- If you are buying a mattress online, lean on the trial. Pretty much every online mattress brand offers 100 nights with free return shipping. Order one, sleep on it for a month, return it without thinking twice if it does not work for your back.
- Walk the open-box section at Best Buy and Lowe's. Holiday weekends bring out the deepest open-box markdowns. Same warranty as new, usually a small scratch on a side panel that nobody will ever see.
- Do not dawdle on grills. The Weber Spirit and Traeger Pro 575 both vanished from inventory by Friday lunch in 2024 and again in 2025. If a grill on this list catches you, buy it.
- Lock in delivery early. Big-and-bulky delivery slots fill up by July 1. If you need it for a backyard party, order by Monday at the latest.
- Check your credit card rotating 5% categories. Chase Freedom Flex and Discover IT often have home improvement or grocery in Q3. Free 5% on top of a sale price.
What to skip this weekend
Two categories you will see plastered on every retailer homepage but where the real pricing arrives later: premium TVs and laptops. Wait nine days for Prime Day, or four months for Black Friday. The gap is significant. Back-to-school stuff is also early; supplies bottom out the last week of July. Save your list for then.

Most retailers launched their promos Wednesday, June 24. Mattress companies (both store and online) started the prior Friday. The peak weekend pricing runs Friday July 3 through Sunday July 5; everything resets to regular pricing by Tuesday morning.
Are 4th of July mattress sales actually different from Memorial Day?
Within a few percent on most brands, no. Where they differ: Memorial Day pushes premium hybrid and innerspring harder, while July 4th leans on memory foam and the online-direct names (Casper, Nectar, Tuft & Needle). If your back leans toward a foam-feel mattress, July is your slightly better moment.
How do you decide what makes the list?
We look at the price history for each item over the prior 30 days and drop anything where the discount evaporates once last week pricing is factored in. We also weight customer reviews (4.0+ minimum, 50+ reviews) and in-stock status. Advertised but unavailable to ship? Off the list.
What is the cutoff for ordering before the holiday weekend?
Amazon Prime by Wednesday morning. Walmart same-day pickup works through Saturday for items in stock at your local store. Anything large (mattress, fridge, washer) needs to be ordered by Friday June 26 to lock in pre-weekend delivery in most metro areas.
Why are grills cheaper today than they will be in three weeks?
Manufacturer end-of-Q2 inventory pressure. Weber, Traeger and Pit Boss reset their floor plans in early July to make room for fall lines (smokers, indoor griddles). The grills you see at sale pricing today are the ones being cleared. Once these floor sets ship out, the next markdown is not until late August.
Should I wait for Prime Day instead?
Depends entirely on what you are buying. For Echo, Fire TV, Kindle, headphones, smaller kitchen appliances: yes, wait nine days. For a mattress, fridge, washer, grill or patio set: today is your better window. Amazon does not lead in any of those categories during Prime Day, and the inventory you want this weekend will be gone.
