TV pricing is the single most manipulated category in consumer electronics. The same 65-inch TCL 4K can move $300 in a week, with the higher number being the same set with a slightly higher 'list price' attached for the marketing. The actual selling price moves much less. The list below filters TVs against where they sat over the prior 30 days, so what you see is the real cut, not a creative number.

The honest take on 2026 TV pricing: the 55-inch and 65-inch mid-range from TCL, Hisense and Vizio is where 80% of buyers should look. They have the same panel suppliers as Samsung and LG, identical HDR and gaming spec at half the price. Premium OLED is genuinely better but the gap to the mid-range is much smaller than the price difference suggests.

55-inch vs 65-inch vs 75-inch — what fits your room

The math that actually matters: viewing distance in feet times 0.84 = ideal screen diagonal in inches. So if your couch is 8 feet from the wall, you want a 67-inch TV (round to 65 or 75, both work). Most American living rooms are 8 to 10 feet, which puts the right size at 65 to 75 inches.

The 55-inch is now considered small for primary living rooms in 2026; it works well for bedrooms or apartments. Flagship Mini-LED ($1,500 to $3,000 for 65-inch). Sony Bravia X95, Samsung QN90, TCL QM85. Better than OLED in bright rooms; comparable in dark rooms. Worth it only if your living room has lots of windows.

Two specs that actually matter for gaming

If you have a PS5 or Xbox Series console:

HDMI 2.1 with VRR (variable refresh rate). Most TVs $500 and above have this in 2026; double-check the spec sheet. Without it, you cap at 60Hz and miss the smoother gameplay PS5 and Xbox Series promise.
Game Mode latency under 15ms. Look this up at rtings.com for the specific model; manufacturer spec sheets often hide it. Anything over 25ms makes competitive games (shooters, fighting, rhythm) feel slow.

For Nintendo Switch only: neither matters. Switch caps at 1080p/60Hz and tolerates higher latency.

Why do TCL and Hisense look as good as Samsung at half the price?

They use the same panel suppliers (LG Display, BOE, AUO). The differences are in the processor, software, color tuning and brand premium. Samsung's processor is genuinely better at upscaling lower-resolution content and has a smoother smart TV interface. For 4K native content (streaming, gaming, blu-ray), the panel matters more than the processor, and the gap shrinks to near-zero.

Should I avoid 'smart TVs' with built-in OS, get a streaming stick instead?

The smart TV OS is fine for most viewers. Roku TV, Google TV and Fire TV are all responsive and have all the major streaming apps.
