Black Friday is the only week of the year where the discount sticker on most major electronics actually means something. We have been tracking weekly pricing on TVs, laptops, AirPods and the standard gift categories since the start of the year, and what hits the floor on Black Friday consistently beats every other 2026 sale event by a meaningful margin. The exception is Amazon-branded hardware (Echo, Fire TV, Kindle), which actually cost less during Prime Day in July.
Most retailers no longer wait until Friday morning. The real cuts on TVs and laptops show up the Monday before Thanksgiving, and the deepest doorbusters tend to drop in three waves: pre-Thanksgiving, Thursday evening, and Friday at midnight. Bookmarking this page now is the simplest way to catch them as they go live; we update as prices change.

-50% Where Black Friday actually delivers (and where it overpromises)
Not every category bottoms out the same week. The list below is what we have observed across the last four Black Fridays for major retailers (Walmart, Best Buy, Target, Amazon, Costco):
- TVs. The biggest cuts of the year. Mid-range 55 to 65-inch 4K from TCL, Hisense and Vizio routinely drop 40 to 55% from Q3 pricing. Premium OLED (LG, Sony, Samsung) drops 25 to 35%, sometimes deeper on the prior-year flagship.
- Laptops. The mid-range Acer, Lenovo and HP lines we recommended in August come back at $50 to $150 lower. Premium gaming laptops and creator machines (M-series MacBook Pro) drop hardest at Best Buy and Costco; Amazon's discounts here are usually weaker.
- Apple. Costco, Best Buy and B&H lead. Amazon is consistently behind on Apple products. Watch for AirPods Pro 2 around $169 to $179, MacBook Air M-series around $750 to $850, iPad at $279 to $299.
- Kitchen and small appliances. Instant Pot, Ninja, KitchenAid attachments, air fryers all hit annual lows. Frequently match or beat Prime Day on these.
- Gaming. Console bundles (PS5, Xbox, Switch with extra games) are the move; raw consoles rarely discount but bundles add $80 to $120 of free games and accessories.
Where Black Friday overpromises:
- Premium phones (current iPhone, Galaxy flagship). Carrier promos require a 24-month line commitment to get the headline price. Unlocked phones rarely move more than 10%.
- Mattresses. Already bottomed out on Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day. Black Friday mattress sales match those, not exceed.
- Premium headphones over $300. Sony WH-1000XM and Bose QC discounts are real but only 15 to 20%. Cyber Monday or January often goes 5 to 10% deeper.
Three rules to keep yourself sane
- Build the list before Thanksgiving. Black Friday is a stress test for impulse control. Decide what you actually want by Wednesday evening, write it down, and only buy items on the list. The retailers know about decision fatigue and price the impulse adds higher because of it.
- Compare against the prior 30 days, not MSRP. Many retailers raise list price the week of Halloween so that a 50% off Black Friday tag looks bigger than the actual price drop. Use a price-tracking extension or our list, both reference the rolling 30-day price for the same SKU.
- Watch shipping cutoffs. If you are gift-shopping, anything ordered after Cyber Monday with standard shipping likely arrives after December 10. Prime, Walmart+ and Best Buy free shipping on Black Friday weekend itself usually beats the deadlines, but third-party Amazon sellers and smaller stores often miss.
Black Friday timeline — when each wave hits
The deepest cuts no longer cluster on a single morning. Plan the week:
- Monday, November 23 to Wednesday, November 25. Pre-Black-Friday "early access" prices on TVs, laptops and small appliances. Most major retailers (Walmart, Best Buy, Target, Amazon) start drops here. Surprisingly, this is when about 60% of headline prices arrive; Friday morning is mostly inventory replenishment.
- Thursday evening, November 26 (Thanksgiving). Online doorbusters open. Stores stay closed but websites push the tightest pricing of the week. The 8 PM to midnight window is when the deepest TVs and gaming bundles often go live.
- Friday morning, November 27. Headline doorbusters; in-store and online. Inventory often runs through within hours on the most popular SKUs (top laptops, popular TV sizes, gaming bundles).
- Saturday and Sunday. Replenishment and second-tier deals. Anything that did not sell through during the Friday rush comes back at similar pricing.
- Cyber Monday, November 30. Online-only round 2. Tech-heavy. Apple, headphones, software subscriptions and digital games tend to hit deeper than Friday.
What to skip — these are not the year's best price
Two categories where retailers run aggressive Black Friday marketing but the real bottom is elsewhere: vacuums and robot vacuums. Prime Day in July typically goes 5 to 10% deeper on iRobot Roomba, Eufy and Shark; Black Friday matches but rarely exceeds. Skincare and beauty bundles. Sephora and Ulta sales in early December (and again in May) hit lower percentages than Black Friday on the same SKUs. If a beauty bundle is on your list, wait two weeks.
Frequently asked questions
When does Black Friday 2026 actually start?
The headline date is Friday, November 27, 2026, but most major retailers (Walmart, Best Buy, Target, Amazon) open their early access pricing the Monday before, November 23. Some run a full two-week ramp; the deepest cuts cluster from Monday through Cyber Monday (November 30). If you wait until Friday morning to start shopping, about 40% of the best deals have already been live for several days.
Are Black Friday TV prices really lower than Prime Day?
For most TVs, yes, by a meaningful margin. Mid-range 55 to 65-inch sets from TCL, Hisense and Vizio commonly drop 40 to 55% from Q3 pricing on Black Friday, where Prime Day in July rarely exceeds 30 to 35% on the same SKUs. The gap is largest on premium OLED. The exception is Amazon Fire TV-branded sets, which usually go deeper on Prime Day.
Should I buy in-store or online?
Online for almost everything. The supposed advantage of going to the store at 5 AM is gone. Walmart, Target and Best Buy all match their best in-store prices online, with the convenience of inventory checking from your couch. Exceptions: Costco floor models, open-box appliances at Lowes and Home Depot, and locally-discounted bulk grocery — all genuinely better in-store.
What is the best Apple discount strategy?
Costco and B&H Photo lead on Apple, not Amazon. Costco MacBook Air pricing is consistently $50 to $100 below Best Buy on Black Friday, with extra warranty for free. B&H is sales-tax-free for out-of-state buyers. AirPods Pro 2 typically hit $169 to $179 across all major sellers; if you see them above $189, wait. iPad pricing converges across retailers to within $10 of each other; pick the one with fastest shipping for your gift list.
When is the absolute deadline to order for delivery before Christmas?
Amazon Prime: December 22 for guaranteed two-day delivery. Walmart standard: December 18 to be safe. Best Buy: December 19 with their fastest paid option. Apple: December 20 for in-stock Apple-fulfilled orders. After those dates, you are looking at digital gift cards, store pickup if available, or apologetically wrapping a print-out of the receipt.
Are there categories where I should ignore Black Friday entirely?
Three: mattresses (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day all match or beat), back-to-school supplies (those are 50% lower in late July), and patio furniture (Labor Day weekend goes deeper because retailers cannot ship outdoor freight through winter). Buying these on Black Friday is paying a small premium for the marketing wave.
