AirPods are the most popular wireless earbuds in the US, with over 80 million units sold per year as of 2026. Apple's pricing strategy is consistent: maintain high MSRP year-round at Apple Direct, let third-party retailers (Costco, Best Buy, B&H, Amazon) handle the discount cycles. The result is predictable but model-specific — each AirPods variant has different best-buy windows.
Below is the 2026 calendar of when each model actually hits real discounts, where to buy, and typical sale pricing.
AirPods Pro 2 (USB-C with Hearing Aid feature)
MSRP: \$249. Typical sale floor: \$169-179.
- Prime Day (mid-July): Annual low at Amazon. Often \$169 to \$179 for 36 to 48 hours.
- Back-to-school (August): Best Buy and Amazon hit \$179-189. Slightly less aggressive than Prime Day but inventory is more reliable.
- Black Friday week (late November): Year's deepest pricing across all retailers. Costco \$159-169, Best Buy \$169-179, Amazon \$169-179.
- Cyber Monday: Matches Black Friday. Sometimes deeper at Best Buy specifically.
- Outside these windows: Costco usually \$199-219 year-round; Amazon \$229-239. Apple Direct stays at \$249.
If you're buying AirPods Pro 2 in 2026, the four windows above are the buy moments. Outside them, expect 5-15% off at most.
AirPods 4 (Standard, with and without ANC)
MSRP: \$129 (no ANC) / \$179 (with ANC). Typical sale floor: \$99 (no ANC) / \$149 (with ANC).
- Prime Day (mid-July): AirPods 4 hit \$99-109 (no ANC) and \$139-149 (ANC). Strongest pricing window of the year for these models.
- Back-to-school (August): Best Buy and Amazon match Prime Day pricing. Walmart sometimes joins.
- Black Friday week: Year's lowest. \$89-99 (no ANC) and \$139 (ANC).
- Outside major events: Walmart and Costco typically \$10-20 below Apple Direct year-round.
The AirPods 4 with ANC is a meaningful upgrade over the standard model and is the AirPods that most casual users should default to. The non-ANC version is harder to recommend — for that price tier, the AirPods Pro 2 on Black Friday gets you better ANC plus more features for similar money.
AirPods Max
MSRP: \$549 (USB-C). Typical sale floor: \$449-469.
- Black Friday week only: The single annual window where AirPods Max sees real discounts. Best Buy and Amazon hit \$449-469. Costco occasionally matches.
- Outside Black Friday: Apple Direct holds \$549 firm. Other retailers may go to \$499-519 but the deeper cuts are November-only.
If you're considering AirPods Max, plan to buy during the last week of November or accept paying full retail. The other AirPods models are more flexible on pricing.
Discontinued AirPods (still available used and clearance)
- AirPods 3 (lightning): Officially discontinued in 2024. Still appears in clearance at Walmart, Costco, and Amazon Renewed. Pricing \$89-119. Reasonable budget option.
- AirPods 2 (lightning, no ANC): Officially discontinued in 2024. Refurbished only through Amazon Renewed and Apple Certified. \$79-99. Hard to recommend new in 2026; AirPods 4 is a meaningfully better entry-tier choice.
- AirPods Pro 2 (lightning): Replaced by USB-C version in late 2023. Lightning version still sold at deep clearance through 2025. By 2026 supply has dried up; buy USB-C version instead.
Where to actually buy
For all AirPods models, four retailers consistently beat Apple Direct:
- Costco (members): Best year-round pricing. AirPods Pro 2 typically \$199-219 outside major sale events. Free 2-year warranty extension. Returns easy through 90-day Costco policy.
- Best Buy: Best for non-members. My Best Buy Plus (\$49.99/year) accelerates promotional access. Member-only AirPods events 4-5 times per year add another 5-10% off.
- Amazon: Best for Prime members during Prime Day specifically. Outside major events, Amazon's AirPods pricing is the highest of the four retailers.
- B&H Photo: Best for buyers in sales-tax-free states. New York and California shoppers pay tax; everyone else gets a 6-9% structural advantage. B&H rarely runs the deepest sale prices but the tax savings net out competitively.
Practical decision rules
- If you need AirPods today and will return them on a sale event: Buy at Best Buy with My Best Buy Plus. Their return window is 60 days for members; cover the \$49.99 membership cost with the AirPods purchase plus 1-2 future purchases over the year.
- If you can wait until July or November: Wait. Amazon Prime Day for AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4. Black Friday for AirPods Max.
- If you have Costco membership: Buy at Costco anytime. Their year-round pricing is competitive and the 2-year warranty is genuine value.
- For students: Apple Education Pricing on AirPods is small (5-10% off) but stacks with Best Buy member events. The combined discount can match Black Friday pricing if timed right.
