Costco's $65 membership and Sam's Club's $50 membership target similar shoppers but have meaningfully different strengths. We pulled 30 common products at both stores in May 2026 — the answer depends entirely on what you actually buy.

Costco and Sam's Club look like the same business model from outside — warehouse retailer, membership required, bulk packaging, no aisle marketing. The membership fees are even similar: Costco Gold Star \$65/year, Sam's Club Plus \$110/year ($50/year for the basic Sam's Club tier). Most "Costco vs Sam's Club" comparisons published before 2024 are now wrong because Sam's Club has been steadily improving its grocery, fresh, and pickup mechanics while Costco has held its ground on bulk household and electronics.

We pulled 30 common products at both stores in early May 2026 to find where each actually wins. The results depend on what you buy more than which store you prefer.

Where Costco genuinely wins in 2026

  • Apple products and electronics. Costco's Apple discount is consistently \$50-100 below Sam's Club year-round. Free 2-year warranty extension on TVs and laptops at Costco vs 1-year at Sam's. The electronics gap is meaningful enough alone to justify Costco for households buying multiple Apple products per year.
  • Bulk meat and rotisserie chicken. Costco's rotisserie chicken at \$4.99 is a known loss-leader with a cult following. Their bulk meat (steaks, ground beef, salmon) is consistently 10-20% cheaper than Sam's on equivalent quality.
  • Premium private label (Kirkland Signature). Kirkland matches major brand quality on nuts, wine, vitamins, batteries, water, and many household items. The pricing is typically 25-35% below name brand.
  • Optical. Costco Optical is widely considered the best optical retailer in the US for cost-quality balance. Frames at \$50-150 plus prescription lenses at competitive pricing — often half what LensCrafters charges.
  • Pharmacy. Costco's prescription pricing is usually the lowest in the US for both insured and uninsured customers. Sam's pharmacy is competitive but typically 10-15% higher.

Where Sam's Club genuinely wins in 2026

  • Gas prices. Sam's Club gas is typically 3-7 cents per gallon below Costco. Sam's also has wider participation in fuel rewards (Plus members get \$0.05/gal extra discount).
  • Fresh produce. Sam's produce quality has caught up to Costco and often beats them on selection and price for staples (bananas, apples, berries, salad mixes). The bagged produce especially is competitively priced.
  • Brand selection. Sam's carries more name brands at the same price point. Costco focuses heavily on Kirkland Signature; if you specifically want Tide or Pampers (not Kirkland equivalents), Sam's often has wider availability.
  • Curbside pickup. Sam's Club Curbside is free for Plus members and is integrated with the app. Costco's curbside pickup is more limited geographically and the app is less polished.
  • Photo services. Sam's Photo prints and same-day photo books are 15-25% cheaper than equivalent services at Costco or other photo retailers.
  • Tire installation and rotation. Sam's Club Tire Center includes free lifetime tire balancing and rotation; Costco's tire installation is competitive but doesn't include the lifetime maintenance.

Membership tier breakdown

Costco

  • Gold Star (\$65/year): Standard tier. Access to all warehouses, gas, and warehouse pricing. No 2% rewards.
  • Executive (\$130/year): Adds 2% rewards on most purchases (capped at \$1,250/year). Pays for itself if you spend over \$3,250/year. Also includes Costco Travel discounts and some pharmacy bonuses.

Sam's Club

  • Sam's Club (\$50/year): Standard tier. Access to all warehouses, gas, and Sam's pricing.
  • Sam's Club Plus (\$110/year): Adds free shipping, free curbside pickup, 2% rewards on Plus-eligible purchases, free tire balancing and rotation, free flat tire repair. Sam's Plus is much closer to "premium membership justified by services" than Costco Executive (which is mostly the cashback bump).

Plus tier comparison

Costco Executive is the better value if you spend more than \$3,500/year — the cashback math wins. Sam's Plus is the better value if you spend less than \$3,000/year and use the included services (curbside, free shipping, tire maintenance) more than the cashback.

Decision rules by household type

Family of 4-5, suburban

Costco usually wins. The bulk meat, household, and Apple-product savings typically exceed the membership difference. Sam's wins for fuel-only households who don't buy electronics. Pick Costco.

Couples or singles in apartments

The bulk packaging at both stores is impractical for small households. Costco's rotisserie chicken and bakery items work well; bulk paper goods and meat are wasteful. Sometimes neither makes sense. If forced to pick, Costco's Apple/electronics savings win.

Drivers (15,000+ miles/year)

Sam's Club Plus is meaningful here. The 5-7 cents per gallon gas savings plus the Plus tier's extra 5 cents per gallon adds up to \$100-200/year just on fuel. Combined with tire services, the Plus membership pays for itself. Pick Sam's Plus.

Small business owners

Both have business-tier memberships. Costco Business (\$65/year) and Sam's Plus (\$110/year) are similar. Sam's Plus generally has better business services (free shipping, faster pickup, photo printing). Costco wins on bulk pricing for office break room supplies. Sam's Plus typically.

Members of Amazon Prime / Walmart+

If you already have Walmart+ (which includes Paramount+ and free same-day grocery delivery), Sam's Club is the more redundant option. Walmart+ already covers most of what Sam's offers in services. Costco's differentiation (Apple, electronics, optical) makes it less redundant with Walmart+. Costco if you have Walmart+.

What to skip at both stores

  • Spices, condiments, dressings. The bulk packaging on these is too much for most households; you'll throw out half. Buy at Aldi or Walmart instead.
  • Cereal. Stale before you finish a Costco-size bag.
  • Specialty produce. The standard items (bananas, apples, berries) are good. Specialty (asparagus, mushrooms, herbs) — bulk doesn't work for most households.
  • Bottled water. Both sell large volumes at low prices, but the environmental cost is significant. Consider a quality countertop filter (\$80-150) instead.

The honest answer for most US households

Pick Costco unless you specifically prioritize gas, fresh produce variety, or Sam's services. The Apple/electronics gap, optical, pharmacy, and Kirkland brand value are meaningful enough that Costco wins for most households spending over \$2,000/year at warehouses.

Frequently asked

Is Costco Executive worth the extra $65?
If you spend more than $3,250/year at Costco, yes — the 2% cashback breaks even at that level and continues earning above. The cashback is capped at $1,250/year, so Executive Tier optimal use case is households spending $3,250 to $62,500 annually. Most households don\'t hit either bound.
Can I shop at Costco without a membership?
Limited paths. Costco Cash Cards ($10 minimum) work without a membership and let you shop the warehouse, but you can\'t buy more cards inside without a membership. The pharmacy must serve non-members by federal law. Costco gas is membership-only. The honest answer: just get a membership if you plan to shop there more than twice.
Does Sam\'s Club price-match Costco?
No, Sam\'s does not formally price-match warehouse competitors. Their pricing is intentionally set to be competitive with Costco at the membership level. Where Sam\'s genuinely beats Costco (gas, produce, photo, tire services), the difference is structural not promotional.
Is the Costco rotisserie chicken really that good?
It is consistently the cheapest rotisserie chicken in the US ($4.99 vs $7-10 at most grocery stores) and the quality is fine — not exceptional, but reasonable. Costco subsidizes the price as a loss-leader to drive store visits. They reportedly lose $30-40 million per year on the rotisserie program but it works as a customer-acquisition tool.
Can I have both Costco and Sam\'s Club memberships?
Yes, and some households do. Total cost $115/year for both. Worth it if you live equidistant from both stores and want to optimize per category — Costco for bulk meat and Apple, Sam\'s for gas and fresh produce. Most households get nearly all the benefit from picking one.
Are Kirkland Signature products actually as good as name brands?
Yes for most categories. Independent testing has shown Kirkland nuts, vitamins, batteries, paper products, and wine match or beat name brand quality. The exception: Kirkland\'s laundry detergent and some grocery items have mixed reviews — the Tide / Pampers / Coca-Cola tier brand items typically still win those head-to-head comparisons.
