Console hardware (PS5, Xbox Series X, Switch) rarely discounts directly — the price you see is mostly the price you pay year-round. Where gaming pricing actually moves: bundles (free games and accessories included), gaming peripherals (controllers, headsets, keyboards, mice), and gaming laptops. The list below filters for items where the current bundle value or peripheral pricing genuinely beats the prior 30-day average.

What actually goes on sale meaningfully: gaming laptops (Acer Nitro, Lenovo Legion, MSI, Asus ROG) hit 25 to 40% off during Black Friday and back-to-school. Gaming peripherals (Logitech, Razer, SteelSeries, HyperX) discount continuously through retailer rotations. Console bundles add value (free games, extra controllers, longer subscriptions) during November-December and back-to-school windows. Console hardware itself almost never moves more than 5%.

Gaming laptop buyer's guide

Gaming laptops are where Black Friday and back-to-school deliver the deepest gaming discounts. Three rules:

  1. RTX 4060 minimum, RTX 4070 sweet spot. Below RTX 4060, you'll struggle with 2026 AAA titles. The 4070 handles 1440p high settings on most games and is the right spend for users who want 2-3 years of comfortable gaming.
  2. 16GB RAM minimum, 32GB future-proof. 16GB handles all current games but new releases are starting to want 32GB for ultra settings.
  3. 1TB SSD minimum. Modern AAA games are 100-150 GB each. A 512GB SSD fills with 4-5 games.

Frequently asked questions

Why do PS5 and Xbox almost never discount?
Console hardware is sold near production cost; the manufacturers (Sony, Microsoft) make money on game royalties and digital store revenue, not the hardware itself. They have no margin to discount. The exception is Black Friday bundles where Sony or Microsoft adds free games or accessories — that's the closest thing to a real console discount.
Is the Xbox Series S worth it as a budget gaming option?
Yes for first-time gamers, kids, or households that already have a 4K TV-targeted gaming PC. The Series S targets 1080p / 1440p at 60-120fps and runs all current-gen Xbox games. The 1TB storage version is the right pick — the original 512GB fills fast. Pair with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for the best value subscription gaming experience.
Steam Deck or ROG Ally — which handheld?
Steam Deck for users wanting plug-and-play with Steam library and SteamOS handling everything. ROG Ally for users wanting Windows 11 (full PC compatibility) and slightly better hardware. The Steam Deck is more polished as a handheld experience; the ROG Ally is more flexible. Both are good in 2026; trade-off is software ecosystem vs hardware capability.
Are gaming chairs worth the extra \$200-500 over office chairs?
Mostly no. The premium gaming chair tier (Secretlab Titan Evo at \$650, Herman Miller Embody Gaming at \$1,500) is overpriced for the actual comfort and ergonomic benefit. A Steelcase Leap (\$1,000 new, \$300-500 used), IKEA Markus (\$229), or Office Star Space (\$200) deliver equivalent ergonomics without gaming-aesthetic markup. The exception is if you specifically want the racing-seat aesthetic.
When is the best time to buy a gaming laptop?
Black Friday week is the year's deepest pricing window — RTX 4060/4070 laptops routinely hit 30 to 40% off MSRP. Back-to-school (August) is second-best for value-tier gaming laptops. The post-CES window (January) sometimes has good clearance on previous-year flagship gaming laptops. Avoid mid-summer (May-July); pricing is at full retail to fund holiday markdowns.
PC gaming or console — which is better value in 2026?
Console (PS5, Xbox Series X) is better value for users wanting plug-and-play gaming with no maintenance. Total cost of ownership: \$499 + \$70/year game pass = \$569 first year, then \$70/year. Gaming PC is better value for users who also work or stream from the same machine. Total cost of ownership starts at \$1,000+ but the machine handles non-gaming tasks too. Both are reasonable; depends on use case.
