Best Mattress Deals — Memory Foam, Hybrid, Innerspring

Mattresses are the only major category in retail where the list price is essentially fictional. Almost every mattress sells at 25 to 50% off the listed MSRP year-round; the question is just whether the current discount is meaningfully bigger than last week's. Three weekends a year (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) the discounts genuinely deepen by another 10 to 15%, and Black Friday / Cyber Monday matches roughly the same depth. Outside those windows, the price you see is what you would have paid two weeks ago in different packaging.

The picks below are filtered against the prior 30 days, so you only see real movements — and we lean toward online-direct brands (Saatva, Casper, Tuft & Needle, Nectar, Helix) because they ship in compressed boxes, include 100-night risk-free trials with free return shipping, and undercut traditional store pricing by 15 to 25% even at full price.

Foam vs hybrid vs innerspring — pick your feel

Three real categories under all the marketing names:

If you do not know what you prefer, hybrid is the safest first choice — it has the broadest fit profile.

What firmness actually means

The marketing uses a 1 to 10 firmness scale where 1 is a cloud and 10 is the floor. The reality is most mattresses sit between 5 and 8, and individual brand scales differ.

Couples with different preferences usually find a middle ground at 6 to 7 firmness, with the foam-feel partner getting a memory foam topper if needed for extra softness.

Buying online — what the 100-night trial actually covers

Most online-direct mattress brands offer a 100-night trial (Saatva 365 nights, Nectar 365 nights, Casper 100, Tuft & Needle 100). The trial means: sleep on it for the period, return it for full refund, free return shipping. Three things to know:

  1. Most brands require a 30-night break-in. You usually cannot return within the first 30 nights — they want you to adjust. Some require a full 60 nights before allowing returns.
  2. Returned mattresses are donated, not resold. Brands cannot legally resell mattresses in most US states. Returns get donated to charity (Goodwill, shelters, Salvation Army). This is genuinely no-questions-asked from your end.
  3. Shipping is free both ways. The mattress comes compressed in a box, shipped to your door. If you return, the brand schedules pickup at no cost to you.

The trial period removes essentially all the risk of buying online. There is no equivalent at traditional mattress stores — most charge a 'comfort exchange' fee of $99 to $300 plus restocking.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 'mattress in a box' actually as good as the store one?
Often better. The bed-in-a-box brands sell direct, so the same $1,500 mattress at Mattress Firm typically costs $1,000 from Saatva or Casper. The compressed-shipping technology has been mainstream for over a decade and does not damage the foam or coils. The downsides are no in-store try-out and you are responsible for setup (usually 10 to 30 minutes), but the 100-night trial replaces the showroom test.
What about people with back pain?
Medium-firm hybrid is the most common recommendation from chiropractors and sleep doctors. Saatva Classic in firmness level 5 (medium), Helix Plus, and the WinkBeds firmness GravityLux are commonly cited. Avoid soft all-foam (sagging worsens lower back) and avoid the extreme firm options (no give for the lumbar curve). Most lower back pain improves with a 6 to 7 firmness hybrid.
How long should a mattress last?
Seven to ten years for a quality hybrid or innerspring. Six to eight years for all-foam (foam compresses faster than coils). Two warning signs that it's time: visible body impressions deeper than 1.5 inches, or waking up sore when you didn't used to. The 'replace every 8 years' rule is roughly right, but quality varies a lot — a $400 budget mattress often needs replacement at 4 years; a $1,500 hybrid often holds up to 12 years.
Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King — which size?
Solo sleepers under 6'2\" and most apartments: Queen. Couples: Queen if room is tight, King if you have the space. Tall sleepers (over 6'2\"): California King is 4 inches longer than King. Twin XL is for college dorms and bunk-bed setups, not adult primary bedrooms in 2026. Full is the awkward middle (only 4 inches narrower than Queen but the same length); usually skip Full and go straight to Queen.
What about cooling features — gel, copper, graphite?
Real but oversold. Gel-infused foam helps marginally compared to standard memory foam (a few degrees cooler). Copper and graphite layer-infusions are similar. The bigger sleep-temperature factors are: the cover material (cotton or Tencel sleeps cooler than polyester), bedroom temperature (set the thermostat to 65-68F at night), and whether the mattress is hybrid (coil base cools better than all-foam). If hot sleeping is a major concern, prioritize hybrid construction over the cooling-feature marketing.
When is mattress pricing genuinely lowest?
Memorial Day (last Monday of May), July 4th, Labor Day (first Monday of September), and Black Friday week. All four hit roughly the same discount depth, around 30 to 50% off MSRP plus bonus accessories like pillows, sheets or adjustable bases. The 'Cyber Monday mattress sale' is real but usually matches Black Friday, not exceeds. Outside these four windows, mattress pricing is roughly flat year-round even though every retailer claims a 'sale' is running.
